AYM are working alongside Horrods, striving to increase the industry’s health and safety awareness.
By training and upskilling in-house, Horrods is handing the tools to companies and when requested,
to subcontractor labour to achieve our goals.
Many companies regularly attend hotmelt mixer training at our workshop in London.
The training covers all aspects of Melter functionality, instructing on the correct operation, thus
ensuring maximum safety for the users, but adding the benefits of using the equipment to its full
potential.
Horrods are driven to achieving this safety and awareness on all sites. Channelling the expertise of
our valuable staff and the machines we design and build to give years of satisfaction, reliability,
and efficiency.
AYM participants found the course to be informative and professionally delivered – all whilst

G'day Kim,
Just wanted to let you guys know how great the Swiftmelt has been (and continues to be) for me.
We use it almost daily, and have learned that we do not need to empty it between jobs since it's
effortless to reheat from solid/cold (that's largely due to the viscosity of Permatrack, which melts at a
low temp).
The simplicity and efficiency of this machine has been even more underlined by the fact I bought a
125kg Merlin mixer (to fit on my Ford Ranger pick-up) which, while very handy for small jobs, is
nowhere near as efficient.
Also, after 5 years of operation I've had virtually no problems with it...
• I had battery issues early on, but they were due to user error (leaving the ignition switch on)
• I had a diesel motor issue, which turned out to be stuck valves due to my lack of oiling them, and
• just recently, I had a small issue with the battery terminal melting. Lucky it was night time or I
might not have noticed the glow from the terminal. It turned out that the positive cable had worn
through and was shorting out on the housing for the ignition switch. Managed to destroy a battery,
but solved the problem very quickly (taped up the cable, and sheathed it in a section of garden
hose).
That last one should be something for all Swiftmelt users to look out for during routine
maintenance. Just check the wire. Given the relative cost of repairs, it's probably a good idea to
double insulate this as I did.

Brought into being because of dangerous practices and short cuts. There were no
professional bodies back in the day, and thus these ‘traditions’ which had resulted
in operatives being injured, property damaged, and many instances across the
country of fires caused by an unregulated industry.
Slowly Health & Safety began to ‘encrouch’ thus it became a
slog to educate, retrain and erase the ‘old days’ from the roofing
industry.
AYM
are working alongside Horrods, striving to increase the
industry’s health and safety awareness.

Questions we are often asked.
Why is the capacity of a Hot Air Melter measured in Drums?
The rubber materials melter capacity has always been measured as drums.
The original drums were said to be ‘45-US gallon’ capacity; an imperial gallon
is a larger entity plus the material was not poured into the drums, the drums
were filled with 8 pieces of solid material, ‘pan cakes’.
A solid material placed inside a drum will never provide the capacity of that
drum, unlike if provided in liquid form.
Which of the melters do not use LPG Propane Gas burners?
Models are run (agitated) electrically unless specified as non-agitated,
or hand-stirred. Only models described as Fully Electric 3-Phase are heated
using electricity exclusively

of no material degradation.
All machines should always be used in compliance with our instruction manuals. Regular

and adapted originally for use with ‘Pacopatch, a polymer modified mastic asphalt
permanent reinstatement system primarily designed for use around manholes and other
street ironworks.’ (Pure Asphalt Co Ltd, now Iko Pacopatch.)

The vertically stirred design unlike, conventional horizontally stirred machines, does
not lift the material away from the heat.

The Whirlpools unique vertical stirrer design pushes the material over the stirrers thus
spending less time away from the heat.

The inverted pan provides a greater heating surface area and combined, these two
features give an overall quicker heating time and use less LPG Propane gas.

A Thermostatically controlled flame failure device - pilot protected main burner

Mastic Asphalt Mixers
Mastic Asphalt mixers have been a staple within the roofing industry.
A larger option than the 10½ cwt cauldrons, and a more effective method
of preparing the materials which are automatically stirred.
Horrods have, throughout the years designed all manner of machines,
which included a mastic asphalt mixer used to reclaim asphalt
from a site used for munitions testing, This meant the reclaimed asphalt
contained particulates of those munitions. As it was heated there would be
minor ignition explosions.

Custom building the chassis of a vehicle to house a new or reconditioned
mastic asphalt mixer is another string to the Horrods bow.

From The Viceroy 12 cwt (left) to the 25 cwt ‘Statesman’ (above).
We have also designed and manufactured a 3 ton capacity
mounted on a towable trailer
Static mastic asphalt mixers are another variation. If the mixer
is required for a certain location where a there is a weight stipulation
the static machine can be dismounted from the vehicle and lifted
where required. Static machines have no set size range, and can be
quoted for all and any size.
Another project Horrods completed was this machine, fitted into
the local Hackney college for the CITB training modules, the machine runs off
of natural gas, has outlets that attach to the ducting and extractor fan. Still going strong!
The machines below were custom made

mounted on a turntable chasis.

Mastic Asphalt Mixers
Mastic Asphalt mixers have been a staple within the roofing industry.
A larger option than the 10½ cwt cauldrons, and a more effective method
of preparing the materials which are automatically stirred.
Horrods have, throughout the years designed all manner of machines,
which included a mastic asphalt mixer used to reclaim asphalt
from a site used for munitions testing, This meant the reclaimed asphalt
contained particulates of those munitions. As it was heated there would be
minor ignition explosions.

Custom building the chassis of a vehicle to house a new or reconditioned
mastic asphalt mixer is another string to the Horrods bow.

We have also designed and manufactured a 3 ton capacity
mounted on a towable trailer
Static mastic asphalt mixers are another variation. If the mixer
is required for a certain location where a there is a weight stipulation
the static machine can be dismounted from the vehicle and lifted
where required. Static machines have no set size range, and can be
quoted for all and any size.
Another project Horrods completed was this machine, fitted into
the local Hackney college for the CITB training modules, the machine runs off
of natural gas, has outlets that attach to the ducting and extractor fan. Still going strong!

achieving when new materials require existing plant to be ‘tweaked’ to
provide a machine capable of heating and processing such an abrasive
substance.

heat 15 gallon unit with hydraulic agitation and donkey
engine please if you wouldn’t mind?

G'day Kim,
Just wanted to let you guys know how great the Swiftmelt has been (and continues to be) for me. We
use it almost daily, and have learned that we do not need to empty it between jobs since it's effortless
to reheat from solid/cold (that's largely due to the viscosity of Permatrack, which melts at a low temp).
The simplicity and efficiency of this machine has been even more underlined by the fact I bought a
125kg Merlin mixer (to fit on my Ford Ranger pick-up) which, while very handy for small jobs, is
nowhere near as efficient.
Also, after 5 years of operation I've had virtually no problems with it...
•
I had battery issues early on, but they were due to user error (leaving the ignition switch on)
•
I had a diesel motor issue, which turned out to be stuck valves due to my lack of oiling them, and
•
just recently, I had a small issue with the battery terminal melting. Lucky it was night time or I
might not have noticed the glow from the terminal. It turned out that the positive cable had worn
through and was shorting out on the housing for the ignition switch. Managed to destroy a battery, but
solved the problem very quickly (taped up the cable, and sheathed it in a section of garden hose).
That last one should be something for all Swiftmelt users to look out for during routine maintenance.
Just check the wire. Given the relative cost of repairs, it's probably a good idea to double insulate this as
I did.

to provide solutions where clients have requested them for their projects.
Below are some of the examples that have been designed to make life easier!
Standard Asphalt & Bitumen Equipment
A Standard bitumen boiler mounted on a flat
top truck fitted with specialist heatshield to protect
the LPG cylinder, and a bucket step to the rear.
Designed to move the bitumen boiler around a site,
never on a road.
The Bitumen boiler itself has a half-hinged lid, with
an immersed outlet tap to decant the materials.

The bucket heater was originally designed to replace the very dangerous pracise of operatives in
civil engineering, using a ‘camping stove’ to heat bitumen in buckets. Balancing basic buckets on this
exposed flame precariously, to use the materials for banding/bonding on roads/motorways in UK.
Since, it has become a very versatile, and far safer optio. Designed in the Horrod tradition, with safety first!
As with most designs, this product maintains the heat in the material necessary for the job when a larger
unit, such as an asphalt mixer, or hot air rubber melter, etc., are unable to be accomodated due to the

for asphalt from a-b (pot/mixer/cauldron) to laying point.
The bucket is made from a heavy spun steel in a single piece
with a tipping handle at the midline, and the carry handle
being attached to lugs welded securely either side.

This bucket is fortified with a striker bar and band
making it a lot more harder wearing.

Used on smaller sites for decanting bitumen from a
boiler.
The crimple roller is a device used on laid hot asphalt
to create a tactile surface. It is a solid ‘roller’ with a
long fitted handle and reverse elevation bar.

From meagre beginnings in 1948, as simply a repair service, Horrod's built itself into the
market leader in the manufacture of asphalt and bitumen equipment, civil engineering, and
highways maintenance plant.
Over the years the company has diversified, building trucks and trollies (manual handling
equipment) and even Hot Boxes, used to store and transport tarmacadam to the nation’s
roadways.
The company was incorporated in January 1961 as a limited company.
Alex and William (Bill) named the company W J Horrod Ltd in tribute to their father,
William John Horrod, who Bill was named after. They employed half-brother Henry James,
who was affectionately known as Packy, and their youngest brother Terry.
Family tragedies in the 1970s saw the loss of first Alex, and then Bill, leaving little brother
Terry to take over, with little to no experience of running a business.
Beside him was daughter Kim, and a year later, his only son Terry Jnr joined the
company, although he had in fact been learning his trade most of his early adult life.
Terry Horrod Snr held himself to a very high standard, thus the company he over saw
was designed and built with the simple philosophy; quality, and safety first.
During this early period, it was always difficult to encourage stubborn roofers, set in their
ways, to understand that some of their practises on site were dangerous.
It was an uphill battle, but nonetheless he persisted, responding each time the industry posed
a question for equipment that would pass muster in an increasingly safety conscious industry;
safety trays, safety buckets, thermostat-controlled bitumen boilers (that actually worked, as
under testing earlier thermostat-controlled boilers, imported from overseas, allowed the
temperature to rise well above the accepted limit for bitumen in the UK.) Horrod’s worked
with Chiltern Services to provide a unit that did exactly as safety and material integrity
demanded - shutting down the burners once the bitumen reached its optimal level.
He also advised HSE on good practices, and assisted in some of their accident
investigations. Terry Horrod wanted rid of ‘cowboy’ methods!
He pioneered safer practices and introduced user training to help better understand
the equipment and the materials used in the trade. His passing in August 2009 was mourned
by many in the industry.
